Kirby's Dreamland 3
By Nintendo of America

Two topics today: video games and Google...

So, I used to pretty much like three types of video games: platformers, RPGs, and fighting games.  But there are so many others!  I've provided below an itemized summary of some video games genres, some of my favorite games in said genre if any exist, and how I feel about it...

  • Platform Games (Super Mario World, Kirby's Dreamland 3, Donkey Kong Country) - Really, these games will probably always be my favorite.  There is just so much that game designers have done and are still doing to make these fresh and entertaining.  It's probably also the fact that about half of them contain a ridiculously high cute factor, and as many people have noted I tend to make choices solely on the basis of cuteness.
  • RPGs (Pokemon, Zelda, Final Fantasy) - So these are games with a story line.  They have really extended play and they take you away to a world that you could imagine existing and living in.  They are an interactive story and that really appeals to me.
  • Fighting Games (Soul Caliber series, Mortal Kombat series, Killer Instinct) - I really like that each character has not only an individual move set, but also a personality.  It's fun to play as the cute girls because a) panty shots happen, b) they tend to be quick and precise, c) they're sooooooooo cute!  But then again it's also fun to play as the massive, hulking, beastly characters that take half your life when the get a hit in, or should I say IF they get a hit in.  Oh, and then there are the weird characters with strange fighting styles and awesome special moves.  And they make good party games.
On to the other genres...
  • First Person Shooters - Uhhh... I don't like these.  First off, I'm terrible at them.  Secondly, I find them even boring to watch.  Yep, that's all I have to say about them
  • Mini Games (Game and Watch Gallery, Monkey Ball) - These are usually cute and generally fun, but I tend to get bored with them
  • Micro Games (Wario Ware, Rhythm Tengoku) - Now these are more like it!  I adore microgames and the shear queerness of them.  So much fun!  So mind-blowingly quirky!  So unbelievably re-playable!  I wish more of them would come to the US.
  • Music Games (Guitar Hero, DDR, Donkey Konga) - I love music, I love playing music on real instruments, I love playing music (and dancing) on fake instruments.  I'm glad these are so popular right now because they are truly lots of fun!
  • MMOs - Uggg!  Gag me with a spoon, please.  Granted, I've only played one of them, but I've seen people play others and it's very, very boring.  Who cares if they're imersive?
  • Puzzle Games (Tetris, Super Puyo Puyo) - These really are great.  In addition to being fun they keep your brain sharp and a lot of the ones for SNES have a great cute factor.
  • Racing Games - Bleah :(  I'm bad at these.
So yeah, have I mentioned that I <3 video games?

And I promised I would talk about Google, so here goes (this segment is much shorter)...

Google has EVERYTHING I NEED FOR THE INTERNETS.  I use Google Mail for email.  I instant message people through Google Talk.  I use Google Documents for working on lab reports with my lab partners.  I keep my calendar and look at my girlfriend's calendar on Google Calendars.  Oh, and Google also happens to be the best search engine too!  It's no wonder google has become so popular.  It's awesome!  My next venture in Google is probably going to be Google Photos.  Google needs a blog system too...

EDIT: Noz, you're a genius!  Now I can use blogger for all my blogging needs and desires.... except no one else really uses it. :(

First, a short rant:

Okay people, if you buy something on eBay and it isn't what you wanted, but is in fact what you ordered, IT'S YOUR OWN DAMN FAULT!  Don't leave negative feedback!  That means you are a douche.

And now, moving on:

I moved in with an awesome new roommate, Casey.  She's pretty much the coolest person I could live with other than Lucy.  I think we'll get along swimmingly.  Photos coming soon (maybe).  But seriously guys, I moved all my stuff out of the apartment.  All of it.  I like hanging out over there, but it was stupid of me to move in.

Mmmmm... Pride Prom!!  Very exciting.  We had a meeting today where we had lots of discussion about theme and people to be in charge.  I get to call people to arrange food.  Yay!  It looks like we are going to have an Atlantis theme.  Also, Pride Prom is open to anyone between the ages of 16 and 25, so if you want to go and you can be in Tulsa on April 21, get in contact with me.  I'm pretty sure I have a date already though :)

Classes are good so far.  Half of them have been canceled this week because my teachers have been or are going out of town.  I think it will be a good semester.  Also, it ends up that I'm not giving a presentation at the conference in Orlando.  I was soooooo super nervous about it and I didn't have much time to prepare, but now I'm off the hook.  Yay!  I'm going to have my hands full enough with the Collegian I think.

Also, for anyone who has checked out OverClocked ReMix, you should.  It's basically video game music that is mixed and/or played on musical instruments.  My friend David has some stuff on the site :)

An overview of my winter break, in the form of movies watched, books read, and parties attended
(Note: may be updated as I watch more movies, read more books, and attend more parties up to but not including January 8th!)

  • My own holiday party, billed as a "Christmahanakwanzukah Party, "Christmas/Chanukkah/Whatever Party," or "Decemberween Party" - truly, a delightful party.  Thursday and I spent all day cooking challah, latkes, and ham.  I personally peeled 14 lbs of potatoes, cooked ham for the first time in my life, knotted and glazed the challah rolls, and mulled a delicious cider.  The food was great, my extensive music collection was pleasant, and the Dirty Santa gift extravaganza was uproarious.  My TU friends met the fabulous Amie and she was approved of by all (not that I give a flying fuck what they thought since I like her just fine).
  • Amie's office holiday party - The employees of Interworks were all a little tipsy by the night's end, the food was tasty, and I got a top-notch tour of the important parts of the OSU campus
  • Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz - not actually a book, movie, or party but, yikes, I left the final screen of one of the party game rounds on so long that the game restarted...
  • The Fountain - the latest Aronofsky film. It was weird.  That's all I have to say.
  • Eragon - next to no character development.  Enraged people who had read the book.  The graphics weren't even that great.
  • The Original Four Christmas Party - fabulous.   Perhaps too much fun with the Mac's built-in iSight.  I do love my friends dearly.
  • Sarah Jo's Crazy Vegas Style B'Day Party - full of risque party games and old friends.  It was really great to see the ever bubbly Sarah Jo again.
  • Miracle on 34th Street - probably my favorite holiday movie!  I love the young Natalie Woods character and her no bull shit outlook on life.
  • The Sound of Music - the music is still great and Julie Andrews is just brilliant
  • Tetris - also not a book, movie, or party, but great music and the greatest puzzle game ever invented (also playable on a GameBoy Color for when someone forgets to bring a GameBoy Advance SP charger with them...)
  • The Holiday - cute cute cute!  A very fun film, but it made me feel lonely :(
  • The Ice Dragon - the most depressing children's story I've ever read. (I loved it)
  • Pooh's Heffalump Movie - a present from Breika.  Lumpy is the cutest!
  • Thursday's Going Away Dinner at Ron's - tasty!  And the company was great : ) : )
  • Jurassic Park - I'd never reallized before that I had never seen the movie before the point that the scientists arrive at the park.  I also reallized that that part is boring anyhow and the movie is better off without it.  I fell asleep about the time that it starts storming and woke up during the "This is UNIX!" scene.
  • Fast Food Nation - okay, so in addition to being a really interesting read, this book really got me thinking about where I would be now if it wasn't for OSSM.  I probably would have ended up at either OSU or U of A majoring in chemistry.  Now, at OSU there is a great food chemistry program and had I chosen to pursue that, after graduating I could have moved to exotic and exciting New Jersey and had the glamorous and cosmopolitan life of a flavorist creating the new taste of a Big Mac as written about in the chapter "Why the Fries Taste So Good."  Yikes!
  • A Letter to a Christian Nation - you should all read this.  EVERY ONE OF YOU!  Yes, those who are not religious will love it and those who are will hopefully have your faith rattled a little.  It filled me with a sense of hope and well-being that maybe the world has a future.
  • Oceans 11 - meh, it was cute and entertaining I guess.
  • The Big Lebowski - this one made me giggle a lot.  A fun one to watch.
  • Pulp Fiction - another good one that I'd never gotten around to seeing
  • Rent - now, I like musicals.  In fact, I love musicals, but this one was very "meh" to me.  I didn't particularly care for the music and I thought the plot was uninteresting
  • Evita - now that's more like it!  Gorgeous music and a really amazing story.  Watch it!
  • Kill Bill, Vols. 1 & 2 - <3<3<3 probably my favorite of all the films I've watched thus far over the break.
  • The God Delusion - I'm only partly finished with this one, but I'm really enjoying it.  It's similar to A Letter to a Christian Nation, but longer and much less concise.  This one has a harsh edge whereas Letter was very empowering.  Still, it's excellent so far.  Warning: this gave me WEIRD cravings to listen to Handel's Messiah.  I think that's just me though.  However, the next track the iTunes queued up for me was "Ode to Joy," and it made me remember that some musical climaxes are more satisfying than an orgasm could ever be.
  • Dark Chocolate and Irish Cream's New Years Spectacular - okay, so this one isn't until tonight but I'm looking forward to it.  What am I going to wear??  **EDIT!**  Ooooooh, lots of fun!  There were sooooo many people there, it was the biggest party I've been to all semester and almost every one was in good spirits.  I met a lot of new people including this old ex-girlfriend of a friend who loves elephants as much as me!  We had a bonding experience and I taught her how to say elephant in a bunch of languages.  Happy New Year everyone!

Trauma Center: Second Opinion

HAIL ME FOR I AM NERD!

I would just like to take this post to recount to you my Saturday.

I woke up around 8:30, played some Zelda and some Guitar Hero.  At 11 we started a game of Twilight Imperium.  That ended at 6.  Austin won.  We proceeded to the Tulsa by Cinemark to catch the 7:20 showing of Casino Royale.  I fine film in my opinion.

And then, I embarked on the most glorious night of my life.

You might have guessed it, but at 10 o'clock I sat my lawn chair in front of Toys R Us on 71st St. and prepared to camp for a Nintendo Wii.

Initially I wasn't even going to buy a Wii.  The plan was for Austin to buy one and the rest of us to just keep him company and play Nintendo DS and generally try to ignore the cold.  But then we noticed that Toys R Us had some external power outlets that had electricity being supplied to them.  But oh noes, the outlet was at the other end of the store!  So Ken, who at this point is in a full World War II Russian army coat and hat because that's how Ken is, pulls out about 80 feet in surge protectors and extension cords.  We send him back to the apartment to get the PS2, the Gamecube, and various controllers.  Ben, David, and I head over to Wal-Mart to buy some foods, socks for Austin who was wearing nothing but sandals on his feet, and some extra extension cord.  Dade got his projector from home and we flipped a shopping cart on it's end to set the projector on, plugged in the PSII and played 10 foot tall Guitar Hero II on the outer walls of Toys R Us.

I can say without a doubt what the hight point of David's night was.  David is an awesome Guitar Hero player and he decided to play Misirlou, one of the hardest songs in GH2, on expert mode in the freezing cold.  He totally kicked the songs ass, bent it over a camping chair, and raped it.  All the random strangers that were camping out with us had stopped playing on their DS's at that point and were just shouting and cheering for David.

At one point fairly early in the night some random woman that thought there was a midnight opening came by.  She decided to leave me with $300 dollars in cash to buy a Wii for her so she would come pick it up in the morning.

I fell asleep at some point and when I woke up the dawn was breaking.  I had Austin drive me to QuikTrip so I could empty the contents of my bladder.  I ate a donut and drank a Jones Cream Soda and prepared wait the last three hours out.  We sat around and chatted.  Packed stuff up.  I played Super Mario Bros. DS.  It's not as awesome as I had expected.  Around 9:00 Austin, who was first in line, stood by the door and everyone behind us followed suit.  We stood around for half an hour.  A manager came out at one point with tickets and he just went down the line passing them out.  Everyone with a ticket got a Wii.  Those without didn't.

The doors opened at 10:00 a.m. sharp.  I picked up an extra Wiimote and nunchuck for the system at the apartment and got in line to make my purchases.  We went back to the apartment and set the system up.  Played some Wii sports.  Everyone was very tired.

I must say that I think my favorite part of the weekend happened at this point.  Austin, David and I all wanted to take a nap, so David went in his room.  Austin had left the couch blanket and all of his blankets except the one on his bed in the car, so he grabbed that one and settled down on the couch with me so that I could have blanket while I napped.  So I got to take a nice long nap in his arms.  After having been cold all night it was probably the coziest experience of my life.

But just so everyone knows, the Wii is amazing.  Playing using your own Mii in Wii Sports is great and ridiculously fun for a sports game.  Twilight Princess is amazing.  Trauma Center is fun.  I havne't gotten a chance to play Red Steel yet, but Dade loves it.

Camping out was one of the coldest and yet most rock awesome experiences of my life.  I hope to do it again in the future, so get ready!
